After I got my Starbucks coffee in Chicago, I had to grab a sleeve from behind the counter. I got caught by an employee and had to explain that no sleeves were sitting out. She told me “we’re trying to phase out sleeves because they hurt the environment.” What?! Phase them back in because this coffee is hurting my hand!
Later I noticed Starbucks cups are 10% post-consumer fiber while the sleeves are 60%. I suspect the real reason for phasing them out is to cut costs, not to avoid cutting trees.
